Hello, I'm still trying to use FreeBSD at home PC, but I have some problems in additional to PPP problems and GNUstep problems (see second mail) I got following in todays root mail at home. I'm happy that this is at home. --------------- checking setuid files and devices: find: /usr/ports/x11/xmangekyou/files/md5: Input/output error find: /usr/ports/x11-clocks/asclock/pkg: Input/output error find: /usr/ports/x11-fm/fsv/pkg: Input/output error find: /usr/ports/x11-servers/XttXF86srv-SVGA: Input/output error find: /usr/ports/x11-toolkits/gtk12/files: Input/output error find: /usr/ports/x11-toolkits/p5-Tcl-Tk/pkg: Input/output error find: /usr/ports/x11-toolkits/xview-clients/files: Input/output error find: /usr/ports/x11-wm/fvwm2: Input/output error find: /usr/ports/x11-wm/wm2: Input/output error find: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/proxymngr: Input/output error find: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/iso8859-1: Input/output error find: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/iso8859-3: Input/output error find: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/iso8859-7: Input/output error find: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/iso8859-15: Input/output error find: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/koi8-r: Input/output error find: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/fujitsu: Input/output error find: /usr/X11R6/lib/Server/config/imake: Input/output error find: /usr/X11R6/lib/Server/drivers98/vga256/nkvnec: Input/output error ---------------------- Also this: > ad0: UDMA ICRC READ ERROR blk# 6529457 retrying > ad0: UDMA ICRC READ ERROR blk# 6529457 retrying > ad0: UDMA ICRC READ ERROR blk# 6529457ata0-master: WARNING: WAIT_READY active=ATA_ACTIVE_ATA > falling back to PIO mode > ad0: HARD READ ERROR blk# 6529457 status=59 error=40 > ad0: HARD READ ERROR blk# 6529457 status=59 error=40 [many times] :-( I have recomiled kernel without "options ATA_ENABLE_ATAPI_DMA", also I have manually turned DMA off by "sysctl -w hw.atamodes=pio,---,pio,pio" I have UDMA33 hard disks. Also all works slowly, and after each disk read I'm getting "ad0: HARD READ ERROR blk# 6529457 status=59 error=40" I didn't had these errors two days ago, I had not recompiled kernel, so I _think_ this is hardware. I have K6/2 on motherboard with ALI chipset. 96MB RAM, 2 IDE hardisks on different controllers. I have Quantum Fireball 5Gb on ad0 and Western Digital Caviar 4Gb on ad3. Quantum is much newer than WD (1 year difference). I have newly installed FBSD 4.1-S and small installation of Win98 on ad0 ad3 is full of my previous Linux data. I _can_ wipe out ad0 without any troubles now. But I don't wish wipeout ad3. So, can you tell me, _____Is this problem with harddisk or with motherboard____ I just don't wish place critical data, and do much work before I know answer. I can change HDD, I can change motherboard. It is not _big_ problem (but it is a prblem) :-) -- Igor Roboul, Unix System Administrator & Programmer @ sanatorium "Raduga", Sochi, Russia http://www.brainbench.com/transcript.jsp?pid=304744 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
