As a newcomer to UNIX and FreeBSD, I've found that references to a mini- DNS refer to the use of DNS as a logical concept rather than a specific implemention of DNS or BIND. In my case, it refers to the DNS I run on my subnet (3 nodes). Basically, I define my nodes in my DNS. If the DNS can't find a name in it's files, it references my ISP's DNS. In effect, it is a caching DNS with a few hard-coded entries.
