There isn't any free telephone help. You really don't need it. The problem
is figuring out how to ask the right question. People spend their personal
time trying to help each other here on FreeBSD-questions.

You need to install the system source. That was one of the options during
the install. Sooner or later, you will want to build a new kernel. If your
system will boot, you don't have to reinstall. There are somethings that you
do have to do to get networking and x-windows running.

When you type "dmesg", do you see your network card being recognized. If you
do, there are some things that you have to do. There is a series of
tutorials at http://www.freebsd.org/. The purpose is getting you off dead
zero. It doesn't take much motion to do significant things. You can download
some such as the handbood as .pdf files with Win 98. You can mount your
Win98 drive in FreeBSD and use the pdf file from FreeBSD. This is handy
until you figure out how to dial out and etc.

X-windows is a different problem. What version of x-windows did you install?
The way you configure XFree86-3.3.6 is different than version 4.0.x. I use
3.3.6 and use XF86Setup to do the configuration. I have 3 or 4 different
video cards and they all use the SVGA x-server.

FreeBSD doesn't depend on x-windows but x sure makes using FreeBSD a lot
easier. X-windows is an application and not part of FreeBSD. The choice of
X-server and video card can be seen at http://www.xfree86.org/cardlist.html.
The same information but looked at in a different way is at
http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.1/Status.html
