Speaking of 14.4 on 9-STABLE (with GM45 however), since KMS patches it appears to me that monitor brightness is not preserved between turning of idling display. To be precise it always "wakes" at full brightness, however adjusting one level down, drops to what appears to be the original brightness level minus one (not maximal).
