Ok,
Class is in session.

Rules for computer component selection for multitasking operating =
systems

The Motherboard:
The following motherboards are known to behave well with multitasking =
operating systems:
(AT, ATX, and ATX PC-100)
* Intel
* Asus
* Tyan
* Iwill

Even with these motherboards it is a good idea to stay away from the =
ones that have the following built-in:
(unless you know exactly what you are doing)
* Sound
* Networking
* SCSI
* Video

The Video Card:
* ATI Tech. (best balance between video and graphics performance, also =
highest reliability)
* Diamond

The SCSI Card: ( for those who like SCSI )
* Adaptec
* MyLan

The Network Card (NIC):
* 3Com
* D-Link
* LinkSys
* Intel

Harddrives:
SCSI:
* Quantum
* Seagate
* IBM

IDE (and variants):
* Seagate
* Quantum
* IBM
* Western Digital

The Sound Card:
* SoundBlaster (all)
* ESS

The Tape Backup System:
* HP ShureStore (all)
* Exebyte

The Video Monitor:
* ViewSonic (all)
* Sony (all)
* Imag

The Desktop Rodent (mouse):
* Logitech (all variants)

The Microprocessor:
* Intel (all)
* Cyrix (except MediaGX) (no SMP support yet)
(AMD is too flaky for use in multi boot applications, although it will =
work with some OS's fine it may exhibit strange behavior, AMD was =
designed for the Win95/98 multimedia market)=20

Complete computer systems
As for complete computer systems, I strongly recommend avoiding the =
following manufactures:
* HP (desktops/servers)
* Compaq (all)
* Acer (all)
* Dell (all)
* Gateway (high end)

For complete computer systems that are safe:
* Acma (also does system burn-in, 48 hours at 96-107 deg. F)
* Legend
Or any manufacturer that will let you dictate what goes into the box.

Thermal issues
When putting together a computer system that will run a multitasking =
operating system it is advisable to pay very close attention to heat =
generated by the following items:
* Harddrive
* CPU
* Memory
* Main chip set

The use of more fans and directed airflow through the computer will =
greatly enhance the longevity of the computer, along with adding larger =
heat-sinks to various chips.
