Subject:   sound is great when under load, bad when not

This is really peculiar:  Sound when underload is great.  No issues. 
When system is idle, I get odd artifacts that sound like interrupts
aren't being serviced fast enough.  This is on an amd64 3000+ machine
playing mp3s with gnome rythmbox.
