You probably saw my "yep, success!" email from a short while ago.
In the meantime I had another failure. But also I think I know what makes
the difference:

the amount of memory one specifies for VMware. In the failure case I had
16 Mb, in the success case I had 8Mb spec'ed. This is on a Pentium100
box with 32Mb RAM. Going back to 8Mb for VMware made the CDROM re-appear.

I'll investigate a bit further.
