The only modems requiring drivers are so-called Winmodems, which are unsupported at this time, and will not be (to my incomplete knowledge) supported in future. (This is true, AFAIK, also with *BSD* and Linux). If this is a Winmodem, it's unsupported. If the kernel probed sio1 (== COM2) and did not find the serial port (i.e. the modem), then it sounds like a Winmodem. Give Winbook a call, or check your docs.
