I would switch to an SSD for my own home server, but I'll have to move my photo collection somewhere else. I've been running VIA motherboards for years, and they've done fine for me. The used laptop scenario isn't a bad idea, either; I know I've got one in the closet that only gets dragged out every year or two for network testing, and it would do that sort of job fine.
