I updated the xsane port from xsane version 0.82 to 0.84 on the same day Andrew installed xsane, so he unfortunately got an old version. xsane 0.84 seems to have a completely rewritten xsane_create_secure_file() function which removes the file before it creates a new one. Andrew, I would suggest to update xsane and check if the problem still exists.
