source distributions like gcc and emacs come with a 'configure' script.
when I try to configure these programs, I get loops.  where the script
should find what my setup is, save the appropriate makefile, and exit
so that I can start compiling, it gets to the end and re-starts the
configure process so that I never actually get to the compiling.
This only occurs on our older 386 computer - compiling on the Pentium
sitting next to it works flawlessly, despite them both having identical
installs.  Suspect that this is a processor-specific problem.
Have ruled out the possibility of rogue configure.sh files left over
from previous installs - this happens consistently on brand new packages
and even brand new freebsd installs.

install freebsd on a 386-based system.
get the most recent perl distribution
run the 'configure' script.
when it gets to the part where it tries to use makedepend, it'll start looping.  ta-dah.
