I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that the speed is somewhat reliant on the protocol. For instance, the older 802.11a/b=20 are like 11Mbps, whereas the newer 802.11g runs at 54Mbps. I am not aware of any faster cards, but I haven't been keeping up to date with wireless.
