What's interesting is that I have pretty much the same options on my
-current box and I have the following

bantu.cl.msu.edu:dervish> ls -l /kernel
-r-xr-xr-x   1 root     wheel     1729523 Jun  3 13:55 /kernel*

Anyway, I'm looking into it still ...
