No, it was NOT an IDE controller, at least not completely.
The circuit board had unpopulated chips and connectors
which if stuffed with parts, would have resulted in an
IDE controller. About the only thing on this board was
some isa bus logic, and a bios chip. On boot the bios
extensions which tell the system how to handle large
hard drives are loaded from this board. Originally the
motherboard (built in ide) would not even talk with
drives over something like 500 meg. It's been a while,
but from what I remember, the motherboard would NOT
EVEN boot when I connected my "Large" 2Gig ;) drive.
This little bios extension board fixed that.

Are you asking me what kind of machine yours is, or mine?
Yours I don't know, but pentium with no PCI must have been
a very early / low cost one. Mine is just a clone with a
486/50 and motherboard of uncertain mfg.
