Well, the APC docs actually refer to it as "simple" mode I just call it "dumb" mode. In "simple" mode the UPS only tells you things like when the battery is in use. If all you want to do is shutdown the machine if the power goes out for more than a few minutes then "simple" mode is good enough. The "smart" mode also tells you things like battery temperature, remaining power, etc. -- features useful for monitoring your UPS but not terribly useful if all you want to do is shutdown in the event of an extended power failure.
