If you want to do this in an xterm then you'll need to take a look at VT100 escape sequences (or xterm control sequences). There's a pretty terse document that lists what is available here: ftp://ftp.x.org/pub/R6.4/xc/doc/specs/xterm/ctlseqs.ms Once you have it on your local box, you can view it with: nroff -ms ctlseqs.ms | more You might also try looking over some the of X FAQs - ISTR this being one of the questions (or some variant thereof).
