I've found a less insecure workaround. Precondition: you are running gpg-agent. Before starting thunderbird, decrypt any file from the command line with gpg2. (Or after starting thunderbird, navigate away from the message you can't decrypt; run gpg2; then navigate back to the message of interest.)
