If you happen to have an .au laying around just do

cat file.au > /dev/audio

If you just want to check it, try

cat somefile.txt > /dev/audio

Should get a bunch of static if it's working ok.

Also try this:

cat /dev/sndstat

Says what the audio driver thinks you have.

> rplay sound.wav 

That would work too.  :-)
