sometimes you have to wait a minute before doing the down/up to
actually make things working again; that depends but cannot say on
what. Had down/up withtinh 10 seconds and things worked fine but the
next time it just took the minute...

it's known to have not-so-correct locking. Check the mailing list
archive for a patch from Doug White from the last 6 weeks or so; that
should help a bit.

Apart from that there might be more issues as people with special
brands or special chip-on-motherboards seem to see more problems.
Check the archives for these postings too (amd64, net, current from
the last two months)
