Well, in case you are using portupgrade tool, consider
the BEFOREBUILD section of pkgtools.conf. Here is how i
used it to apply patches before they were commited...
BEFOREBUILD = {
# 'print/lyx' => 'cd /usr/ports/print && patch -p0 < lyx.diff',
# 'x11-wm/icewm' => 'cd /usr/ports && patch -p0 < icewm.diff',
