I got this problem after installation of FreeBSD 4.6 on an intel P75 system. Any help to get the cdrom working will be appreciated. Error message is something like: acd0: READ_BIG command timeout - resetting ata1: resetting devices .. done and is repeated several times I've tried fixes for a similar problem as suggested in later release notes: set hw.ata.ata_dma="1" set hw.ata.atapi_dma="1" at start of boot and in /boot/loader.conf but this doesn't make any difference that I can see. NetBSD 1.5.2 installed straight off and cdrom seems to be fully functional afterwards (so I should be able to mount a FreeBSD partition and copy the cd set over from NetBSD). Below is some hopefully relevant info from both FreeBSD and NetBSD: FreeBSD 4.6-RELEASE #0: Tue Jun 11 06:14:12 GMT 2002 murray@builder.freebsdmall.com:/usr/src/sys/compile/GENERIC i386 ATA channel 0: Master: ad0 <IC35L080AVVA07-0/VA4OA52A> ATA/ATAPI rev 5 Slave: no device present ATA channel 1: Master: acd0 <CD-ROM 36X/AKU/U23> ATA/ATAPI rev 0 Slave: no device present from /var/log/messages: CPU: Pentium/P54C (75.17-MHz 586-class CPU) Origin = "GenuineIntel" Id = 0x525 Stepping = 5 Features=0x1bf<FPU,VME,DE,PSE,TSC,MSR,MCE,CX8> real memory = 50331648 (49152K bytes) isab0: <Intel 82371FB PCI to ISA bridge> at device 7.0 on pci0 atapci0: <Intel PIIX ATA controller> port 0x3000-0x300f at device 7.1 on pci0 ad0: 78533MB <IC35L080AVVA07-0> [159560/16/63] at ata0-master PIO4 acd0: CDROM <CD-ROM 36X/AKU> at ata1-master PIO4 and from NetBSD 1.5.2: pchb0: Intel 82437FX System Controller (TSC) (rev. 0x01) pcib0: Intel 82371FB PCI-to-ISA Bridge (PIIX) (rev. 0x02) wd0(pciide0:0:0): using PIO mode 4, DMA mode 2 (using DMA data transfers) cd0 at atapibus0 drive 0: <CD-ROM 36X/AKU, , U23> type 5 cdrom removable cd0(pciide0:1:0): using PIO mode 4, DMA mode 2 (using DMA data transfers) To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
