Dear Sirs.

We expect to start a new FreeBSD driven server in Octobre based
on a TYAN Thunder 2500-80 mainboard. This board uses the older
version SymBios Logic 896 chip controler revision, I do not know
whether the newer 1010 cips will work under FreeBSD.

Due the effords in changing to a RAID 5 system I have some questions.
TYAN offers on this board a PCI slot marked as RAID III port for cheap
RAID solutions (including RAID 5). Has anybody experiences with such a
"cheap" RAID solution, targeting performance, costs, reliability
and stability?

On the other hand, I'm looking for a worth-to-buy 2 channel SCSI-3/160
(PCI 64/66 Slot) RAID 5 controller. I saw some compatibility aspects for
Mylex and ISP based controllers, but I never read anything about performance under
FreeBSD. I maintain an older Server with a Mylex DPD960PD controller and
this one is a litlle bit outdated and slow - but really reliable. Adatptec
offers some RAID controllers based on newer SCSI-3/160 chipsets, but
they seem to have a massive performance penalty compared to Mylex or others
and I think they are only supported by Linux.

If anyone con offer me some performance aspects, offer me some sites where
to watch out what's offered in this area (RAID 5 based on SCSI-3/160), please
contact me. Any information is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Gruss O. Hartmann
