Silly me.  I dneed to pay more attention to my installs.  I though t i
had the devel version installed before, but i didn't.  The devel
version autodetects vi in the EDITOR env variable, and set command
line editing appropriately.  Interesting feature, but it sure does bee
a lot.

Returning to good old 3.0.7 fixed everything.  Sorry for the impatient
questions, i just need this whole system ready for school, and i'm in
a rush to get it done before i leave for vaca on tuesday.
