We did a migration from a Windows email server a while back (about 40,000 mail boxes). As customers logged into the FreeBSD boxes, a process was kicked off to copy email from the Windows box to the FreeBSD boxes, this being done using SMB + some parsing in the script. This worked flawlessly for about 10 million files.
