Personally I would have thought ',' is a more dangerous character to * use than ':' since it's a very common list element separator. I don't know * how much it matters though. ':' is actually very bad because it will confuse make. (See the "make parallel" target in ports/Makefile -- it generates a Makefile used in the parallel package building system.)
