Have you considered adding shell alias to your profile files? We have /usr/share/skel/dot.profile (/usr/share/skel/dot.cshrc for [t]csh) and /usr/share/skel/dot.shrc installed into $HOME when new user's created. They already create some generic aliases and it's easy to add another one.
