Problem resolved, someone added a line 

       IN      CNAME   horst

to the relevant named config file so that our web server would answer to
bfd.com in addition to www.bfd.com (and horst.bfd.com, obviously), which
apparently confused sendmail. Since it isn't related to the FreeBSD
upgrade, I'll take this to the sendmail newsgroup.

BTW, anyone know the right way to do this?  I understand the sentiment,
but I refuse to do it if it means breaking email.
