I don't use portupgrade, I prefer to deinstall package then install new one.
Before upgrade Thunar, first you must install x11/libexo, then Thunar.

If you use x11/slim, you will find log (slim.log) in /var/log
directory. Or if you use Xdm, in your $HOME, there's .xsession-errors
file.

You've perhaps .gtkrc-2.0 file in your $HOME.
