In order for the pkg tools to treat the user-config files as special (which is a *fine* idea) they'd have to be ID'd to the pkg tools. They would not have to be pre-md5'd (that would be a bad idea, actually, because these files would be customized by the port to fit the user's system). The pkg tools, if they were told, perhaps by the PLIST, that some files were user-config, could generate an md5 on installation and store that info in the /usr/db/pkg/* dirs. This could then be used on deinstallation intelligently. I don't know how the /usr/db/pkg/* dirs are made, by bsd.port.mk or by pkg_add. If the latter, then IDing the files by PLIST would be better, but if by the makefile, then a makefile var (like MANn now) would be better.
