Fellow FreeBSD'ers Would anyone out their be *interested* in me and anyone else who wants to join in starting some sort of FreeBSD hardware standards body? I am writing to this list in order to propose an industry-wide set of performance standards for FreeBSD based hardware suppliers. Whilst attempting to rate each and every product that our company provides in terms of desired application (e.g. Cluster Nodes, Database Server, Desktop, File Server, Mail Server, Printer Server, Router, Web Server, etc.), and in terms of desired performance, I thought that we (FreeBSD hardware suppliers) should have some sort of 'standards' base. I'm not talking *raw* performance figures against each type of FreeBSD system provided (like SPECcpu2000, etc. from www.spec.org) like Sun and the like use, but maybe a classification based on application. Thus, our customers would instantly be re-assured that a box from XXX company would perform or be able to do similar tasks to a box from YYY company whilst still complying to their required specifications - just by checking its classification rating. To make things clearer - say we agreed that for a box (of any spec) to perform adequately well as a Web server, it would need to be able to handle X number of page views a minute (or second, or whatever). Then, for each box in our varying product ranges that could serve the X pages per minute, we could rubber-stamp them as being fit for the purpose of Web serving. This concept could be further extended to include sub-categorisations like 'Web Server Class 1', 'Web Server Class II', and so on. (Ok, page views a minute might not be the best example, as performance really comes down to NIC, cabling and bandwidth - but I hope that you get picture!) Is this a good thing??
