BSD is cheap, fast, reliable.  NT is... ummmm..., well.  Anyway...
the general order of things is this:

1. Build BSD gateway with 2 NIC's: one for the subnet, the other
   for a direct connection to the motorola box.
2. Get a DHCP *client*, build it, then install it(I use www.isc.org)
3. Get rrlogin.c, compile it, run it(http://people.qualcomm.com/karn/rr).
4. Do the admin such as setting up /etc/host, /etc/resolv.conf, etc
5. Set up your workstation(s)
6. Put on your happy face.

It works and works well.
