12-18-96 Is there a good and easy way to add new disks to the SCSI chain? Perhaps a better question is, is there a good and easy way to partition/format old/new disks without having to revert to using the original install disk for FreeBSD? My only recourse is to do a mock install on my new drive, boot up the system and copy everything over from my old drive onto the new one, nuke the entire filesystem on the old one, reimplement a filesystem on the old one, copy everything back from the new drive, and then (phew!) erase everything on the new drive and REBOOT! off of the old drive. Also, can anyone recommend the best way to move this kind of information without losing data? I was thinking of doing a dump of the entire filesystem on the old drive into a single file on the new one. My hope is that all of the permissions, times, and other amenities will be maintained in this way. Tar doesn't catch everything. As a recovering SunOS administrator, I am used to the good 'ol format utility that allowed all of this to be done painlessly in single/multi user mode without these kinds of hassles. Any help would be appreciated. Josh Pincus -- System Security Administrator Computer Interest Floor University of Rochester Rochester, NY 14627 sadmin@roundtable.cif.rochester.edu
