dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ad0 bs=512 count=32
fdisk -BI ad0
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ad0s1 bs=512 count=32
bsdlabel -w -B ad0s1

did the job. I think I shouldn't have specified -w in the last command 
because it created a root partition taking the whole disk which I then 
had to delete.

But, at least I'm up booting :-)
