Interesting to hear someone else talk about this subject. I wanted to try
and set up WindowMaker (my fav. wm at the mo.) for my girlfriend (whose
used mainly Mac's) to try and use and see how she would cope but fear there
aren't enough graphics apps around (she a graphic designer) for
FreeBSD/Linux for me to convince her. Still Unix/X is *so* configurable
that there might be *some* selling point.

I haven't tried WINE (windows emulator) myself, but maybe that would some
sort of solution?
