The fact that I think it's a horrible > idea also enters into it. :) I think example files should stay in /usr/share/examples or /usr/local/share/examples. Also since mergemaster needs to be tuned for the system it's on I would think that /usr/local/etc would be an appropriate place to put the mergemaster.conf.
