arne@kamino:~% file /sbin/umount 
/sbin/umount: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (FreeBSD), for FreeBSD 5.0.2, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped

your umount binary seems to be broken (or the file tool)
