Hi there,

I have not needed help with BSD so = much as I do=20 now.

This morning I was greeted with = messages regarding=20 read errors for a second HD (wd1) I had installed a week earlier. I = fsck'ed a=20 few times which reported unreadable sectors for the problem HD and so I=20 physically removed the drive from the IDE with intent to give it back to = the=20 seller. fsck also showed me that wd0, the primary HD was working ok with = a=20 little fragmentation.

Now when I boot up it gives me this -=20

Searching for Boot Record from=20 IDE-0...OK
Invalid Partition
Invalid Partition
No /boot/loader
>>FreeBSD/i386/BOOT
Default:0:wd(0,a)/kernel
boot:
Invalid partition
No /kernel

Of course, I can't boot anything from = here because=20 of 'Invalid Partition', not a GENERIC kernel, not an old compile... = nothing.=20

I am not new to unix but I am new to = BSD and while=20 I have read the docs, HOWTO's, handbook, etc etc I think there might be=20 something I am missing.. getting this fixed concerns me but knowing what = I did=20 wrong concerns me more. Is there something I should have done before I = removed=20 the secondary HD? Is there a reason why I am getting invalid partition = when=20 booting when I can run fdisk (post install config from cd) and it shows = me that=20 the drive is partitioned correctly with the usual = 3 partitions,=20 the largest being the freebsd native type.

I am sorry to clog the mailing list = with such an=20 annoying error, I would fdisk and start over but this is for a server = machine I=20 have been working on for several weeks. Starting over could mean = literally=20 months of coding/reconfiguring due to my inexcusably lax backups. = (fellow=20 admins please take pity!)

Please forward help to my reply = address (dylan@dragnet.com.au) and I = shall post=20 the solution(s) summary back to the mailing list.

Cheers,
