Subject: ftp defaults for make

I've always had an unresolved problem getting 'make install' work for =
ports.

If I use ftp manually I always have to enter 'passive' to switch passive
mode off before I can even use ls. I've seen archived messages which
suggest putting FTP_PASSIVE_MODE=3D YES in /etc/make.conf to cure the =
opposite
of this problem, so I set FTP_PASSIVE_MODE=3D NO as the only line in a =
newly
created /etc/make.conf (FreeBSD-4.2) but it made no difference. (There's
no mention of ftp mode in /etc/defaults/make.conf)

make install always works fine if the *.tar.gz is already in distfiles =
but
always times out if it has to use ftp.

Also, where is the password set for anonymous ftp connections as used by
make install?

Thanks again
John.
