Try the CVS version of gphoto2. You'll see on their mailing list that the
last stable version doesn't work on FreeBSD for Canon cameras. This has
been the situation for quite some time - maybe it's time to ask the port
maintainer to consider upgrading the port (they haven't released a new
stable version yet, so I can see this getting some objection).
