A workaround (worked for me, at least -- I have a CT5880-E) is to switch the XMMS output to ESD. I thought it might just have to do with dynamically allocating vchans or something, so I promptly forgot about it until now. Perhaps XMMS isn't "playing" with vchans properly but ESD does?
