Thanks for the suggestion. I tried setting that, then 'sudo reboot now', but the system came up with the same USB errors as previously. Indeed, the BIOS (or UEFI or whatever) spent about 10s or so waiting for me to press a key, because it seemed to have trouble getting the USB system working. One power-off-power-on cycle later, and it booted up error-free, and much more quickly. In case it's pertinent, I also have this in my /boot/loader.conf file: hw.usb.xhci.xhci_port_route=0 Thanks, Phil
