This might be a bug in i915kms; I found that after removing snd_hda from
GENERIC I get the timeout messages and the codec fails to attach, but when I
have a display connected to the HDMI port on my laptop the 2nd codec attach=
es
and works.

This seems to be a similar issue:

Can folks who have experienced this issue try reproducing it with a display
attached to the HDMI port?
