Dillon lost his commit bit because he didn't play well with others. The deeper technical issues aren't as cut and dried as you make them sound. Dillon's contributions, while interesting in their own right, wouldn't have completed SMP. And the specific point of contention has been finished now for at least 6 months. Warner
