What do you mean by ``constantly''?  For that matter, what do you mean
by ``cranking''?

I suppose a lot depends on exactly what you're observing.  You could
try running iostat:

$ iostat 1
      tty             fd0              wd0              wd2             cpu
 tin tout  KB/t tps  MB/s   KB/t tps  MB/s   KB/t tps  MB/s  us ni sy in id
 128  470  0.00   0  0.00   8.00  52  0.40   0.00   0  0.00  11  0  6  1 82
   1  544  0.00   0  0.00   4.30  53  0.22   0.00   0  0.00   5  0  6  0 88
   0  535  0.00   0  0.00   3.30  59  0.19   0.00   0  0.00   4  0  2  1 94

This outputs statistics every second.  Ignore the first line, it's an
average since the machine was booted.
