your best bet here would be to install the software via the ports
collection rather than the packages...most of the packages havent been
updated for the new XF86 release but the ports should install just fine

FreeBSD 2.2.8R uses XF86 3.3.3 because it was released later than FreeBSD
3.0R (see the mailing list archives to find out why 2.2.8 would be
released after 3.0)
