Of course quality is one of the first concerns in porting. We must continue the effort to make ports in better quality. I personally feel that principle of FreeBSD ports can be seen in `GENERIC' kernel. GENERIC contains as many configurations as possible that are not necessarily needed for all the persons; users build their own reshaped kernels afterwards (maybe this example does not reflect perfectly the fact, but at least my feeling `install many choice at first and a user selects afterwards' should be not so far from the truth.). To reduce the number of ports to watch personally, I am very fine with my meta-port. In my meta-port, I put all ports needed in *_DEPENDS line. So usually I only use a very limited subset of GENERIC port system. Also, I am very happy to encounter many nice programs in grace of the ports. Cordially, ----- Yoshio MITA, Ph.D. P.S.
