Thank you for clarification. Yes, it works as expected in scripts on 8.3 
and 7.4:

 > cat 1.sh
#!/bin/sh
false & pid=$!

echo "I forgot about child"
sleep 3

wait $pid
echo $?

 > sh 1.sh
I forgot about child
1
