 *   to rebuild it via autoconf from configure.in. I've decided to use
 *   USE_AUTOCONF instead of including the re-build configure script in
 *   ${FILESDIR}

Thanks, but why are you including the 6k line patch to configure if
you are defining USE_AUTOCONF?  (The handbook explicitly this.)
