In fact, the ports/archivers/gtar port provides the latest GNUtar (1.13.25) which is on the list of things I install upon first booting a freshly installed FreeBSD box. Not on production boxes obviously but I'll put it through its paces at home for you if you like. I should think it would be pretty straightforward seeing as there is already a port which has taken care of any potential build problems.
