OK, here's what I've since discovered:

There's definitely a problem with some of the ports and C++ linkage.  For
some reason, they're wanting to use /usr/local/lib/libstdc++.so instead of
/usr/lib/libstdc++.so.3.  Adding a symlink from /usr/lib/libstdc++.so to
the library under /usr/lib seems to have solved that problem.

But why aren't these ports configuring with the proper library?  It's very
odd.
